Stroll through Salerno

We woke up crazy early, still getting used to the change in time zones.  We eventually went back to sleep and then didn't wake up until 11.  We took our time and left in search of food since we had most definitely missed the complimentary breakfast at the hostel.

We wandered around and found little ally ways with tiny shops, most were closed and then finally we walked into a small bar that was selling espresso and other drinks.  It was called Champagne and they were sold out of all pastries.  We somehow managed to ask about a place to eat lunch.  He asked another local to walk us over to a neighboring restaurant called Trattoria Sant'Andrea.  Wow, what a find, I mean really really!  The owner/server was super friendly, I don't know how but we managed to communicate perfectly with him.  We ordered a mixed seafood spaghetti and a carbonara dish and started it with anchovy in oil.  Everything was delicious and inexpensive.

After that we headed off to the water front called the Porto Masuccio Salernitano.  It is a one way street with shops and across from that is a wide walkway and bike path lined with trees and benches.  We came a across a gelato store and then kept making our way down towards some docks where we saw the struggles of the locals as the lifted a small boat out of the water with a crane.  Later we saw that same boat being towed down the streets on a truck.

From a distance we saw what looked like old ruins of some type.  As we made our way there we saw surfers.  Yeah, surfers in the Mediterranean, Sergio took pictures of one who actually caught a pretty good wave,  Side note: he was wearing a white t-shirt and speedos. Anyways, we made the trek to the ruins and didn't really discover what it was but we got some great view of Salerno.

We wandered some more and ran into the Cathedral San Mateo. OMG I can't wait to share those pictures.  It has beautiful fresco's and a crypt with more amazing fresco's wall to wall decorative marble, beautiful!

Buona sera,

Steph & Sergio
